The iRobot Roomba 980 Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums remove pet hair, lint, and dust from floors before it can settle. They also can avoid obstacles like furniture that is tippy and staircases.

The majority of robotic vacuums require regular maintenance. This includes emptying the bin (and sometimes rinsing it) and wiping the sensors and cameras. They also need to be plugged in. Many come with smartphone applications for scheduling, setting and more.

iRobot Roomba 980

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest model in the line of top-of-the-line robot vacuum cleaners that are a staple of any modern household. This model has seriously strong suction as well as an HEPA filter that will help anyone concerned about allergies. It also has a large battery that can be cleaned for up to two hours, and return to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

It also has an option called smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help suss out the areas in your home that need attention and make a tidy path around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of moving around toys that have been abandoned on the floor robo mops or furniture legs that are sticking out from under the furniture. It also has a camera sensor that snaps the Roomba back to reality when it starts drifting from its intended location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers beneath the bottom of the Roomba that do not have bristles, and thus tend to be more resistant to tangles than earlier models. They're also taller than older rollers and are able to fit under low couches and beds and are designed to allow this model to move more easily on varying flooring types.

The Roomba 980 stands out from other models with a high-end price tag due to its latest dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to detect dirt embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous version, that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around the room and clean at least three times from different angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. Its score on low pile carpet was impressive, and it also scored a good score on mid pile too. It did a good job of picking up pet hair, but it was struggling with very thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and it's even close to being as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It has many of the features you'd expect from a top model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps or home integrations you'll get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is available for use right away. After taking off the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from its undercarriage it is simply connected to an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it do the work. It will automatically return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's stuffed with debris, and it also has indicators on the top for when its bin is full, it needs to be recharged, or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
