Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
