How to Replace an audi key shell G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However, the error audi tt key Case code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car key cover audi will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're inexpensive and Audi smart key replacement easy to locate, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi keyless Go, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common feature across the audi q3 key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find good ones in wrecking yards.
