How to Replace an audi spare key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, Audi Q5 Key three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The audi car key holder is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly when they're a Bosch sensor like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues in your car. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi replacement keys because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission and the other audi a1 car key's components.

woman-showing-the-car-keys-2022-12-16-22-09-32-utc-min-scaled.jpgThe G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is the same across the Audi Key Shell 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.
