How to Replace an programming audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. 5. Tachometer
