WoW Upgrades - The item upgrade Upgrader

Upgrades give you an increase in certain statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item Level upgrade by +3. A random substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless it has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the necessity to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item level upgrade used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every few weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item level upgrade however, they are always cheaper than buying new equipment. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items which can be used to improve the quality of weapons tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be bought by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade items level in the event that there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and current item level, with weapons costing more than bracers or gloves, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain amount, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Upgraders for items are available at many locations including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases according to the number of items that are being upgraded, and can be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead, the NPCs that can be used to upgrade must be acquired through several methods, which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been altered a bit, with numerous new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a certain item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading further items to the same level will cost less, even when they belong to an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain achievement milestones.

Crests

Players have a number of choices when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specific and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are a crucial element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System that was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

First, you must be aware that Crests are only available to gear that is of a particular rank. Each rank comes with an upgrade path that is different. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the most complicated can require as much as 20 crests based on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by completing content of the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, dungeons or raids of all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons to obtain endgame gear. Crests can be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too difficult, but the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. When a piece of equipment has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest level possible on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important modification is that crests have one use, so it's important to use them properly. For instance it's best to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the best equipment you have, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, that will be able to avail the discount for all accounts when all slots are full of high-quality equipment.
